How CBD can help for Bursitis

Reading Time 1.5′-2-5′ (Music at the bottom)

Let’s look at how CBD can help for Bursitis.

Bursitis is a painful condition in which the bags, or sacs filled with fluid around the joints swell. Bags are important for proper joint function, as they help them move comfortably while cushioning tendons, bones and ligaments as they move. Bursitis can go away on its own, but a bursitis attack can cause pain, swelling, reduced range of motion, and mobility problems.

Bursitis is usually the result of excessive use of a joint, but it can also be caused by trauma.

Bursitis is usually the result of excessive use of a joint, but it can also be caused by trauma. Even bending or kneeling on hard surfaces for a prolonged period may increase the risk of bursitis. People who are in poor health, have a poor posture or live a sedentary life are at greater risk of bursitis. In addition, people who are very active, such as athletes are also prone to the condition. In some cases, even an infection can cause bursitis.

CBD is an affordable and natural alternative to conventional medications and treatments used to treat a variety of conditions, including bursitis. You do not have the risk of harmful side effects like those you get with other conventional medications.

The chronic pain that is felt with bursitis can be a disabling condition that affects all aspects of your life. You can do simple tasks such as tying your shoes, buttoning your shirt and brushing your hair are challenging. Because of your constant battle against pain, you may begin to feel depressed.

CBD can significantly relieve your chronic pain and other symptoms, as well as improve your quality of life. It is an effective and much safer option for treatment.

cbd oil for cough

Can You Treat Coughs and Colds with Cannabis?

During winter, coughs and colds are something most of us deal with. Although the simple, ubiquitous viruses that cause these common illnesses are hard to “cure” outright, there are various ways that cannabis can be used to ease their symptoms. We will discuss how to incorporate cannabis into your diet and health care regime to prevent and treat colds.

The common cold is a viral, highly contagious illness that is more likely to affect people during the winter months. Responsible for a range of symptoms including dry or chesty cough, runny or congested nose, sore throat, fever and fatigue, the common cold is not caused by just one virus. Instead, it is associated with as many as 200 different viruses.

One type of virus particularly associated with the common cold is the rhinovirus (with “rhino” meaning “nose”, this literally just means “nose-virus”!), which can be the culprit for up to 40% of colds There are three main species of rhinovirus and at least 99 different serotypes (strains). As well as rhinovirus, the common cold is also associated with various strains of coronavirus, adenovirus, enterovirus and influenza virus.

How do cold viruses cause symptoms?

Cold viruses are passed from person to person by hand-to-hand and hand-to-surface contact, as well as airborne transmission of viral particles. Hence, it is important to cover the mouth or nose while coughing or sneezing, and to wash hands regularly!

Once a cold virus has infected a human host, it gets to work – infiltrating the mucous membranes of the nose, mouth, throat and reproducing rapidly. For the most part, cold viruses such as rhinovirus don’t cause any particular damage to the body – they simply cause an immune response as the body recognises unwanted invaders exploiting its resources.

But for immunocompromised people or individuals suffering from asthma or COPD, catching a cold can be seriously bad news.

Many rhinovirus serotypes bind to an immune protein known as intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1). This protein is present on the outer cell membrane of certain epithelial cells (which make up the upper layer of the mucous membranes). The rhinovirus essentially hijacks it to gain entry to the interior of the cell. Once the virus has gained entry to its first host cell, it can take control of the cell and hijack its reproductive system in order to reproduce itself. (Yikes!)

Usually, ICAM-1 helps cells adhere (stick together), particularly after injury or stress. But when it gets hijacked by the rhinovirus, it sparks off a release of pro-inflammatory cytokines (cell signalling proteins), which leads to inflammation of the mucous membranes of the throat and nose.

This inflammatory response is key to the congested and sore feeling associated with having a cold. For most people, that’s pretty much the worst of it – but it can lead to severe complications, including pneumonia, for certain people.

Cannabinoids and ICAM-1

The endocannabinoid system is now well-known to be deeply involved with the immune system and cannabinoids have been repeatedly demonstrated to cause complex immunological effects. But when it comes to ICAM-1, there is sparse research available, and apparently nothing on the direct relationship between cannabinoids, ICAM-1 and rhinovirus.

There is evidence that cannabinoids can influence ICAM-1 expression levels in certain situations, though. One study reveals that CBD and THC can both cause increased expression of ICAM-1 on certain lung cancer cells, which leads to an increased rate of cell “lysis” (cell death via disintegration of the membrane).

This may be good news for cancer research, but increased expression of ICAM-1 is certainly not what one needs when trying to prevent a rhinovirus from taking hold. In fact, there is evidence that rhinovirus can increase the expression of ICAM-1 in order to provide itself more hijacking opportunities! Perhaps more useful is the discovery that certain cannabinoids can reduce the expression of ICAM-1 in other situations.

For example, the synthetic cannabinoid R(+)WIN 55,212-2 may indirectly block the expression of ICAM-1 by blocking the activity of interleukin-1, another important immunological protein. This particular study investigated multiple sclerosis and how cannabinoids can help slow its progression – and intriguingly, there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that rhinovirus could be instrumental in the pathogenesis (development) of MS.

Clearly, there is still much to learn about the transmission and pathology of the rhinovirus and other types of common cold virus – as well as how all this relates to chronic autoimmune disorders like MS. But it’s clear that the endocannabinoid system is fundamentally involved. There may be potential for certain cannabinoids to help prevent the transmission of rhinoviruses in certain situations by reducing the expression of ICAM-1.

So how can cannabinoids help treat coughs and colds?

Despite all our best efforts, and no matter how healthy we are, it is almost inevitable that sooner or later one of those 200 viruses is going to overcome our body’s defence systems and cause a cold or cough. When that happens, there’s not a whole lot that can be done to actually cure the illness – cold viruses are so numerous and so quick to mutate that developing effective antivirals and vaccines is all but impossible.

So when we catch a cold, it is pretty much inevitable that we will have to let the virus run its course and that we will feel significantly subpar for several days. But there are various ways we can ease the symptoms of colds and coughs. For example:

  • honey
  • salt-water gargles
  • saline drips
  • ibuprofen
  • paracetamol

Of course, you probably already know that… But what about cannabis? There’s plenty of evidence that various compounds in cannabis have anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. THC, CBD, CBC and CBG are all known to exert. There are also plenty of terpenes and terpenoids in cannabis with similar properties, such as linalool, limonene and eucalyptol.

Various cannabinoids and terpenoids are even known for their relaxing, anti-anxiety or sedative effects. During times of illness, such properties may be very useful in increasing subjective feelings of wellbeing. And as what some might consider a bonus? Common colds can also cause appetite loss in some people and THC in particular has been repeatedly demonstrated to have appetite-stimulating properties.

How to use cannabis during a cold

When we catch a cold, we are likely to experience nasal congestion and sinus pain, sore throat, dry or chesty cough and irritated watery eyes – None of these symptoms are improved by smoking of any substance. Even vaping or dabbing will probably exacerbate sore throats and coughs – even if these methods are usually not as hot or as harsh as smoking itself.

For this reason, it’s best to stick to edibles, topicals and anything else that doesn’t cause irritation to the throat and lungs. Hard candies infused with CBD or THC can help soothe throat inflammation and soreness. At least one US company, Jolly Meds, offers THC-CBD lozenges with added menthol and eucalyptus oils to enhance their soothing and decongestant effects.

Another method that many people report to provide subjective relief is cannabis tea. Teas and herbal infusions can offer soothing, warming and comforting relief from cold and cough symptoms. When cannabis extracts are added, they may provide extra help in the fight against inflammation and pain.

There are many ways to make cannabis tea. The general idea though, is to ensure that at least some fat or oil is used. This will allow the cannabinoids to dissolve and infuse through the mixture. Hot water alone will not dissolve cannabinoids. Therefore, making some cannabutter or cannabis-infused milk and adding that to a hot-water infusion may yield improved results.

As well as cannabinoids themselves, various other plant compounds could provide benefits if infused into tea. For example, tea (particularly green tea) contains catechin flavonoids, which have been found to be beneficial against cold and flu viruses.

With winter comes the dreaded coughs and colds we all hate. While it’s hard to outright “cure” them, there are several ways cannabis can help.

starting a cbd business

How to Start a CBD Oil Business

A CBD oil business will sell and/or manufacture CBD oil for a variety of purposes. This may happen either online or in stores, though most people won’t open up a specific retail location selling CBD. Most businesses will sell the oil for general purposes (e.g., anxiety, chronic back pain, etc.), though some will concentrate purely on cosmetic uses, with others even blend CBD oil and coffee.

Learn how to start your own CBD Oil Business and whether it is the right fit for you.

Start a cbd oil business by following these 9 steps:

You have found the perfect business idea, and now you are ready to take the next step. There is more to starting a business than just registering it with the state. We have put together this simple guide to starting your cbd oil business. These steps will ensure that your new business is well planned out, registered properly and legally compliant.

STEP 1: Plan your business

A clear plan is essential for success as an entrepreneur. It will help you map out the specifics of your business and discover some unknowns. A few important topics to consider are:

Luckily we have done a lot of this research for you.

What are the costs involved in opening a cbd oil business?

If you grow your own hemp and turn it into CBD oil, then your costs to start will be low. You can begin selling your product online with little more than a website made for a few hundred bucks with Squarespace and commercial liability insurance in case a customer sues you after using your product. You can also consider partnering with an established farmer to grow their business and your own.

What are the ongoing expenses for a cbd oil business?

Owners need to account for the cost of farming, insurance, and staff salaries. They may also want to hire a lawyer to keep up on the rapidly changing laws.

Who is the target market?

Practically anyone can use this product. CBD oil is used to relieve anxiety, soften skin, and reduce chronic pain. Most famously, it’s given to kids who have severe seizures to reduce their frequency and severity. It can even be taken by people for general relaxation at any time. CBD oil is derived from cannabis, but it does not cause a psychoactive effect like THC will.

How does a cbd oil business make money?

CBD oil businesses will create their own profit margin for their products, based on the scope of their operation, quality of their product, and demand for CBD oil among their target demographic.

How much can you charge customers?

It’s not unusual to see CBD oil sold for $60 for just 30 mL. 100 mg in a 2 oz bottle of skin lotion can be sold for $85.

How much profit can a cbd oil business make?

CBD oil businesses can make a good deal of profit once their customer base is established. If you charge an average of $60 per product at a 50% mark-up, you’ll need to sell 200 products every month to make $6,000 in profit. This goal can be easier to meet than you may think given the exceptional demand.

How can you make your business more profitable?

CBD oil owners can branch out to different types of products to boost their profits. From skin care to make-up to tinctures to vaping to edibles, there are a lot of different options available.

What will you name your business?

Choosing the right name is important and challenging. If you don’t already have a name in mind, visit our How to Name a Business guide or get help brainstorming a name with our CBD Oil Business Name Generator

If you operate a sole proprietorship, you might want to operate under a business name other than your own name. Visit our DBA guide to learn more.

When registering a business name, we recommend researching your business name by checking:

  • Your state’s business records
  • Federal and state trademark records
  • Social media platforms
  • Web domain availability.

It’s very important to secure your domain name before someone else does.

STEP 2: Form a legal entity

Establishing a legal business entity such as an LLC or corporation protects you from being held personally liable if your cbd oil business is sued.

Read our Guide to Form Your Own LLC

Have a Professional Service Form your LLC for You

Two such reliable services:

  • ZenBusiness ($39 + State Fees)
  • LegalZoom ($79 + State Fees)

You can start an LLC yourself and pay only the minimal state LLC costs or hire a Business Formation Service for a small additional fee.

Recommended: You will need to elect a registered agent for your LLC. LLC formation packages usually include a free year of registered agent services. You can choose to hire a registered agent or act as your own.

STEP 3: Register for taxes

You will need to register for a variety of state and federal taxes before you can open for business.

In order to register for taxes you will need to apply for an EIN. It’s really easy and free!

You can acquire your EIN for free through the IRS website, via fax, or by mail. If you would like to learn more about EINs and how they can benefit your LLC, read our article, What is an EIN?.

Learn how to get an EIN in our What is an EIN guide or find your existing EIN using our EIN lookup guide.

Small Business Taxes

Depending on which business structure you choose, you might have different options for how your business will be taxed. For example, some LLCs could benefit from being taxed as an S corporation (S corp).

You can learn more about small business taxes in these guides:

There are specific state taxes that might apply to your business. Learn more about state sales tax and franchise taxes in our state sales tax guides.

STEP 4: Open a business bank account & credit card

Using dedicated business banking and credit accounts is essential for personal asset protection.

When your personal and business accounts are mixed, your personal assets (your home, car, and other valuables) are at risk in the event your business is sued. In business law, this is referred to as piercing your corporate veil.

Additionally, learning how to build business credit can help you get credit cards and other financing in your business’s name (instead of yours), better interest rates, higher lines of credit, and more.

Open a business bank account
  • This separates your personal assets from your company’s assets, which is necessary for personal asset protection.
  • It also makes accounting and tax filing easier.

Recommended: Read our Best Banks for Small Business review to find the best national bank, credit union, business-loan friendly banks, one with many brick-and-mortar locations, and more.

Get a business credit card
  • This helps you separate personal and business expenses by putting your business’ expenses all in one place.
  • It also builds your company’s credit history, which can be useful to raise money and investment later on.

STEP 5: Set up business accounting

Recording your various expenses and sources of income is critical to understanding the financial performance of your business. Keeping accurate and detailed accounts also greatly simplifies your annual tax filing.

STEP 6: Obtain necessary permits and licenses

Failure to acquire necessary permits and licenses can result in hefty fines, or even cause your business to be shut down.

Federal Business Licensing Requirements

Although CBD oil does not produce psychoactive effects like the THC found in marijuana, the two products are associated closely enought that the production and sales of CBD are currently in a legal grey area. Before starting your CBD oil business, it is important that you make sure to read up on both state and federal laws regarding CBD products. This will help ensure your business functions smoothly and avoids legal trouble.

State & Local Business Licensing Requirements

Certain state permits and licenses may be needed to operate a CBD oil business. Learn more about licensing requirements in your state by visiting SBA’s reference to state licenses and permits .

Most businesses are required to collect sales tax on the goods or services they provide. To learn more about how sales tax will affect your business, read our article, Sales Tax for Small Businesses.

For information about local licenses and permits:

  • Check with your town, city or county clerk’s office
  • Get assistance from one of the local associations listed in US Small Business Associations directory of local business resources .
Certificate of Occupancy

A CBD oil business is generally run out of a place where the oil is manufactured. Businesses operating out of a physical location typically require a Certificate of Occupancy (CO). A CO confirms that all building codes, zoning laws and government regulations have been met.

  • If you plan to lease a location :
    • It is generally the landlord’s responsibility to obtain a CO.
    • Before leasing, confirm that your landlord has or can obtain a valid CO that is applicable to a CBD oil business.
    • After a major renovation, a new CO often needs to be issued. If your place of business will be renovated before opening, it is recommended to include language in your lease agreement stating that lease payments will not commence until a valid CO is issued.
  • If you plan to purchase or build a location :
    • You will be responsible for obtaining a valid CO from a local government authority.
    • Review all building codes and zoning requirements for your business’ location to ensure your CBD oil business will be in compliance and able to obtain a CO.

STEP 7: Get business insurance

Just as with licenses and permits, your business needs insurance in order to operate safely and lawfully. Business Insurance protects your company’s financial wellbeing in the event of a covered loss.

There are several types of insurance policies created for different types of businesses with different risks. If you’re unsure of the types of risks that your business may face, begin with General Liability Insurance. This is the most common coverage that small businesses need, so it’s a great place to start for your business.

Another notable insurance policy that many businesses need is Workers’ Compensation Insurance. If your business will have employees, it’s a good chance that your state will require you to carry Workers’ Compensation Coverage.

Recommended: Learn what business insurance for your CBD Oil Business will cost.

STEP 8: Define your brand

Your brand is what your company stands for, as well as how your business is perceived by the public. A strong brand will help your business stand out from competitors.

How to promote & market a cbd oil business

CBD oil is popular enough that you’re going to have some stiff competition. Most people are going to be looking for CBD oil online — especially if they’re looking for the more concentrated, medicinal products. Paid online ads, organic blog content, and social media can help attract people to your product. If you’re selling general, lower-intensity sprays, then you can develop relationships with general health stores or even grocery stores to stock your products.

How to keep customers coming back

Customers are going to need to feel relief after taking your products. While research is few and far between, you can do your own analysis of which products are working for different demographics by asking for feedback. This can help you suggest the right product so that there’s less experimentation (and frustration) on the part of your customers.

STEP 9: Establish your web presence

A business website allows customers to learn more about your company and the products or services you offer. You can also use social media to attract new clients or customers.

Start A CBD Oil Business In Your State

Take our Entrepreneurship Quiz to find out!

What happens during a typical day at a cbd oil business?

It’s rare there will be a ‘typical’ day in the CBD oil business because this business is so new and there are few established business models. An owner may be doing anything from managing inventory to dealing with new regulations to running lab reports for their product. Owners should also be devoting time on a regular basis to keep up with changing trends in their industry (as they can change extremely quickly.)

What are some skills and experiences that will help you build a successful cbd oil business?

People should have some experience with the cannabis market. Owners should understand the basic public demands as well as the public fears and residual stigma of cannabis. There’s a lot to learn about cannabis due to the variety of the product. Understanding the different terpenes and strains can make it easier for your company to stay ahead.

What is the growth potential for a cbd oil business?

Because of its versatility and rapid rise in popularity, CBD oil is predicted to hit $1 billion by 2020 in the US alone (some say even closer to $2 billion.)

What are some insider tips for jump starting a cbd oil business?

Understanding the industry is going to be key to getting started. CBD oil is a legal gray area — no matter how you manufacture it. You’re far less likely to run into authorities if you extract your CBD from pure hemp instead of marijuana, but cannabis can be confusing to people who have no experience with it. This can lead to being taken off the shelves or being shut down until local authorities figure it out — which could be a while.

Hemp and marijuana are both from the cannabis plant, but they’re used for very different purposes. CBD oil has enough legal implications that there hasn’t been a lot of official research on it. While this appears to be changing now that the FDA has recently approved a CBD oil drug, it’s unclear how quickly widespread acceptance will happen. In states like California and Washington, your pushback is likely to be low. But in states like Indiana and Kansas, you may have a very difficult time meeting the official regulations of the state.

You should also be extremely honest with your customers whenever possible. Because there isn’t a lot of research on CBD oil, it’s impossible to really say that CBD oil can ‘cure’ anything. While the evidence may be extremely compelling, you want to present both sides of the story whenever possible. The good news is that side effects are extremely mild and it’s impossible to overdose on CBD oil.

One good way to show people that your business is legitimate from right off the bat is to become Clean Green Certified. This certification is essentially the equivalent of the organic label in grocery stores. You’ll need to go through some rigorous testing in order to pass, but these tests help assure people that they’re getting pure CBD oil and not the synthetic, illegal products that may make them ill.

How and when to build a team

You don’t necessarily need to build a team right away if you’re growing the hemp yourself. However, if you’re partnering with other people, you should consider hiring someone to help you decipher the legal puzzles and marketing strategies of the CBD oil business.

Best CBD Oil For Seizures – Top 5 Wonderful Options

Every day we are bombarded by external stimuli – lights, sounds, traffic, noise, you name it. And, our body processes all of these stimuli through the central nervous system coordinating the signals into a symphony of sounds and visions that make sense to us.

Our central nervous system coordinates all of this stimuli through communication with electrical impulses transmitted through neurons, which are cells that make up the brain. This system usually functions quite well, but when it doesn’t, that is when a seizure can happen. A seizure is an uncontrolled electrical impulse in the brain. It is literally a brainstorm of electrical activity.

CBD for Epilepsy

CBD can help treat various health problems, with the best CBD oil can be found here. While many drugs can treat epilepsy, none are known to prevent its development. A third of people with epilepsy remain resistant to their medications. This leaves them open to increased risk of sudden unexpected death from epilepsy-related seizures or impairments in psychosocial, behavioral, and cognitive functions. This resistance to traditional medications makes CBD products very appealing as an alternative treatment modality.

The interaction between CBD and other epileptic medications is unknown and may be responsible for the elevated liver enzymes seen in some studies of Epidiolex [1] (FDA’s approved CBD drug for epilepsy). However, such adverse effects were not severe and precautions were issued with recommendations to monitor the liver enzymes and concurrent medication levels while using CBD. Otherwise, CBD is generally considered safe, non-psychoactive, with few side-effects.

Does CBD Oil Help with Seizures?

The current therapy for seizure control fails to control seizures in 30-40% of patients [2] , leaving an unmet need for other viable treatment options for this disorder. Not only is there a high failure rate, but the side-effects to classical seizure treatment is often felt to be worse than the seizures themselves. It is no wonder that many people have turned to CBD as a potential, alternative treatment option for epilepsy and seizures.

In research published in Epilepsy & Behavior [2] , it was found that those using CBD had reduced seizure frequency and its side-effect profile in only 12 weeks, with the maintenance of results stretching into 24 and 48 weeks. This research study used oil void of THC.

Research has shown the use of CBD oil to decrease the frequency of treatment resistant epilepsy [3] with Gestalt syndrome by 20% while the rate of decrease in undifferentiated epilepsy is less clear.

How Does CBD Oil Stop Seizures?

CBD restores normal brain rhythms. It does not do this by a direct effect on cannabinoid receptors, however. It acts via the endocannabinoid system. CBD antagonizes the GPR55 receptor at excitatory synapses [4] in the brain and inhibits the chemical messengers thus calming seizure activity. The GPR55 receptor is one of the endocannabinoid receptors involved in CBD communication between cells and are part of the endocannabinoid system.

CBD desensitizes TRPV1 channels. The TRPV1 channels determine how your body experiences pain and are located throughout your central nervous system and brain. People who have epilepsy have more TRPV1 receptors in the temporal lobes of their brains than those who do not have epilepsy.

CBD inhibits nucleotide transporters reducing adenosine updates. In the brain, adenosine is a CNS depressant, an inhibitory neurotransmitter. It is essential for the proper functioning of every cell in the body. Research shows us that adenosine receptors are powerful for regulating seizures in epilepsy [5] .

CBD Treatment for Seizures

The two main cannabinoid treatments for seizure are THC and CBD. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) only recognizes Epidiolex, a purified CBD isolate, as an approved form of treatment for two forms of epilepsy, Dravet Syndrome & Lennox Gastaut Syndrome (LGS). Gastaut Syndrome and Dravet Syndrome [6] are each a form of epilepsy where using CBD has been shown to make a significant positive difference for many people.

Gastaut Syndrome and Dravet Syndrome are severe refractory forms of epilepsy that begin in childhood and are resistant to most treatment. Current available treatments fail to control seizures in most cases thus making the identification of new medications necessary.

Some research has shown CBD-rich extracts performed better than purified CBD [7] in treatment resistant epilepsy. Patients using the extracts used a lower dose than that for purified CBD and reported fewer side-effects. This study [7] concluded that CBD extracts had a better therapeutic profile than did purified CBD in treatment resistant epilepsy.

According to conflicting research, pure CBD products may be the ideal candidate for treatment resistant epilepsy [8] therapy. It is believed to calm seizures by normalizing brain rhythms through a cascade of events. The true mechanism remains unclear [9] , however, and some of the research is contradictory.

Epidiolex is pure CBD, with no THC added. CBD has no “high” associated with it, as THC does. FDA currently allows CBD products for sale with up to 0.3% THC in it as a full-spectrum product. Research shows THC can have both seizure-promoting [10] and anti-seizure activity making its use as a drug for seizure control more conflicting.

CBD Oil for Non-Epileptic Seizures

Epilepsy is the most common pathology of the brain [11] accounting for 1% of the worldwide burden for this disease. Diagnosis can be difficult and would be made easier if a reliable set of biomarkers for this disease could be agreed upon. Though seizures are characteristic of all types of epilepsy other common symptoms may include muscle jerking, staring, loss of consciousness, weakness, and anxiety.

Animal research has shown CBD is effective at reducing seizures regardless of the cause [12] or type of epilepsy making CBD oil attractive for possible use in non-epileptic seizures such as seizures caused by increased inflammation or drugs. Oxidative stress can also stimulate seizure activity.

CBD has been shown to reduce inflammatory mediators, thus reducing seizure risk. CBD has antioxidant properties, which also aid in the alleviation of oxidative-stress-induced seizure activity.

Furthermore, CBD may reduce free radical generation and metabolism. Free radicals can build up in cells and can cause damage. Most of the harmful effects of oxygen are due to free radical generation.

How to Use CBD Oil for Seizures

CBD oil is a carrier medium mixed with CBD and an oil such as olive, coconut, or other indigestible oil and can also contain other endocannabinoids depending on whether you buy isolated, broad, or full-spectrum products.

Choosing the right oil can be critical to your success in alleviating your seizures. CBD products come in isolate forms devoid of THC and other cannabinoids except for CBD, or as full-spectrum CBD products that contain all the cannabinoids and makes full use of the endocannabinoid system, or as a broad-spectrum CBD product, which contains all the cannabinoids except for THC.

CBD oil used orally is best absorbed by placing under the tongue and holding it there for a time to allow maximal absorption and avoiding the first-pass metabolism through the gastrointestinal tract. There is a large vein located just under the tongue where absorption can start immediately.

CBD products also come in various edible forms or can be smoked in a vape cartridge. It might be noted that FDA has not cleared using CBD for oral consumption [13] despite legalizing its sale and despite a statement from the World Health Organization that the consumption of CBD is safe and not subject to addictive properties.

CBD Oil Dosage for Seizures

Because of the FDA ruling, it is not legal to propose dosages for CBD where we are not dealing with an FDA-approved medical condition attributed to a drug. The only drug to receive FDA approval for the treatment of epilepsy is Epidiolex, a plant-derived source of pure CBD.

Each CBD product contains a different concentration. Read the product instructions to assure you are taking it properly. Talk with a doctor or health professional if you have questions about how to take CBD for specific conditions and, especially if there are any drug-nutrient concerns.

Of interest, in the Epidiolex studies, most patients were treated with doses of CBD between 20-30 mg/kg/day. Establishing dosages for CBD oil that is effective has been challenging due to the lack of human clinical trials in this area. The lack of human trials can historically be blamed on its legality, the difficulties in gaining funding, and limitations of state-to-state transport. Some of this legal red tape is coming to an end with the legalization of hemp and the liberalization of the sale of CBD.

Hemp Oil for Seizures

Hemp derived extract was given to 138 patients for epileptic seizures [14] . Sixty-eight percent of the study respondents reported decreased seizure severity or frequency from the effects of CBD. About 2/3 reported other effects of CBD such as better sleep and improved alertness. Adverse events were reported by 22% and included diarrhea, fatigue, and increased seizures.

Cannabis oil may have unwanted levels of THC in it, which, in some studies, has precipitated seizures and caused increased anxiety. Hemp derived oil comes from the agricultural hemp plant, a plant different in composition than the cannabis plant since hemp is bred to contain minimal amounts of THC.

Best CBD Oil for Epilepsy

The research to date points to using CBD as the preferred cannabinoid in the treatment for epilepsy. The addition of THC may increase the risk of seizures and may invoke side-effects not seen with pure CBD. The best CBD oils for epilepsy are the isolates and the broad-spectrum oils, which contain no THC and are the closest in structure to Epidiolex, keeping in mind that more study is needed and this area is still controversial.

Frequently Asked Questions

Although the World Health Organization [15] has cleared CBD of any serious side-effects, clinical trials have shown that as many as 20% of those using CBD may experience low blood pressure, fatigue, dizziness, or diarrhea. CBD should not be used in pregnancy since animal studies have shown developmental delays and fetal abnormalities. Human studies have not been done in this area.

In some cases, yes; Some studies [16] have shown users of whole hemp-extracted oils had more seizures than prior to using these oils. Users of CBD oils are recommended to keep a symptom diary not only for dose adjustments but to track any adverse events or increase in seizure activity. More clinical trials in this area are needed.

The optimal strains of cannabis for seizures are the ones highest in CBD, such as Charlotte’s Web, Cannatonic, Purple Urkle, Grape Ape, Haleigh’s Hope, and Harlequin.

Many studies show possible anti-seizure activity by CBD. Although the exact mechanism is unclear, its effects appear to be multifaceted acting on a number of different endocannabinoid targets including the GPR55 and TRVP receptors.

    how to extract cbd crystals

How To Grow Crystal THC and CBD

    What is Crystalline Isolate?

Crystalline Isolate is an extremely pure form of cannabinoid that is extracted using CO2 or butane/propane. Available in both THC-A and CBD, crystalline can contain up to 99.97% THC or CBD depending on the application.

For some this high-potency offering may seem excessive, but for many it is rather attractive. Medical marijuana patients are actively seeking the benefits of higher doses while veteran smoker may be looking for a new level of high. No matter the use, crystalline isolate is an exciting development within the chemistry of cannabis and the development of novel methods of consumption devoid of any harmful solvents and carcinogens.

While it is certainly possible to draw out extracts that are extremely high in THC and CBD with CO2 and hydrocarbon extraction and distillation, but THC-A and CBD crystalline opens up different potentials for storage and consumption to the market. For instance, storage is much more convenient when using crystalline isolate, less messy when dabbing, and easier to incorporate into foods and topicals (presuming you have decarboxylated your crystals). Did I mention that it is also very pretty to look at?

So How Do They Make This Stuff?

You may be familiar with extractions, and if you’re not feel free to check out this article here discussing the two main types to refresh your knowledge, either way, in order to form crystals you must start with a cannabinoid-rich cannabis extract.

Ideally, in order to maximize on time and resources, A-grade flower with a high THC-A or CBD count (depending on what you’re isolating) will be blasted with CO2 or butane/propane in order to extract the greatest yield of cannabinoids from the plant material. The crude oil that is extracted isn’t completely “clean” and will typically have a fair amount of waxes and lipids emulsified within the oil. Once the crude oil is winterized and the major waxes and lipids are filtered we would be left with cannabis extract that could be placed within a vape cartridge or dabbed on a rig. However, this oil will range from 65-90% THC or CBD and still exist within a viscous/fluid state. In order to solidify the cannabinoids out of the remaining non-cannabinoid material, we must take the cannabis extract add different solvents in different stages and run it through a number of different filtrations.

The first step is to take your cannabis extract and mix it with acetic acid and hexane, the combination of chemicals will act as a solvent to separate the dissolved plant matter from the THC/CBD. After the mixture has had time to settle, it is put through a filter and then the remaining fluid is placed within a roto-vape where the acetic acid and hexane are evaporated off. The remaining mixture will be primarily Delta-9 THC-A or CBD-A.

In order to further purify the extract, chromatography is used in order to separate impure elements of the solution from the desired cannabinoids. Chromatography (sounds complicated but isn’t really) is a chemical process where different materials and mediums are used to separate different components within a solution based on its affinity to the different filter mediums and density (kind’ve like your standard water filter). In the instance of THC-A, chemists add Sephadex-LH20, dichloromethane and chloroform in order to further clarify the cannabis extract into majority cannabinoids and solvent devoid of any plant material.

The remaining solvent from the mixture needs to be evaporated, so it is placed within the roto-vape again, where it crystallizes. Afterwards, in order to make the crystals consumable, they go through a series of chemical washes, filtrations and roto-vaping.

Post chromatography, the crystals are dissolved in methanol and then filtered and then roto-vaped to remove the methanol. Afterward, pentane is used to remove the smallest bits of non-THC or non-CBD material and then roto-vaped for the last time. The results, white crystals testing at 99.97% cannabinoid.

The only caveat to this is that you will not have the accompanying terpenes, and therefore will not experience the “entourage effect” that cannabis flower provides. However if you are intent on re-creating such an experience, you can reintroduce cannabis terpenes into your crystalline, or simply soak it within “terp sauce”.

*Disclaimer, this post is for informational purposes only, the chemicals mentioned above are caustic and dangerous. We do not recommend you try this. This is not a tutorial.

    hemp oil extraction

What Is The Best Way To Extract CBD From Hemp?

Keep reading to find out how to extract CBD, and which method produces the highest-quality CBD oil. While they all harness the power of CBD, they don’t all achieve the same degree of purity.

    Contents:

    Why does CBD extraction matter?

To produce CBD oils, cosmetics or supplements, you must first extract the cannabinoid from raw plant material. Fortunately, the most abundant source of CBD is hemp, a selectively bred crop used extensively in dozens of commercial industries.

Although there are many ways to extract CBD from hemp, some methods are much more efficient and safer than others. It’s essential to know the difference, since how you extract CBD affects the purity and efficacy of the final product.

What are the options for extracting CBD?

Below, you will find a breakdown of some of the most common extraction techniques used, including their main pros and cons.

    Solventless CBD extraction (by hand)

How does one make CBD extracts without using a solvent? Simply enough, you just have to apply heat, pressure, or a bit of friction to hemp flowers and leaves. How do you do that, you wonder? Well, if you freeze hemp flowers, you can shake the small trichomes loose and gather them together. These trichomes, as you might know, contain the full spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes found in the hemp plant.

    Pros of solventless extraction

    • No additional equipment needed
    • Makes use of the whole hemp plant
    • Cheapest method of extraction

    Cons of solventless extraction

    • Yields are low and impractical
    • No way of controlling purity, with minimal levels of CBD
    • CBD extract contains plant material and unwanted cannabinoids

    Olive oil CBD extraction

First, to perform olive oil extraction at home, you need to make sure your plant material is decarboxylated. In short, that means it undergoes the process of acidic cannabinoids being activated via heat. That, of course, happens when you smoke or vape it, but it can also happen if you put it in the oven.

Once decarboxylated, mix your plant matter with olive oil and heat it on the stove for several hours. CBD, other cannabinoids and essential terpenes will bind to the fats in the oil, creating an infused product. Finally, the mixture is left to cool before being filtered to remove any leftover plant material.

    Pros of olive oil extraction

    • Can be performed easily at home
    • Relatively safe, with no previous extraction experience needed
    • Greater degree of purity compared to solventless extraction

    Cons of olive oil extraction

    • Little control over the final extract
    • Weak and unreliable CBD content compared to more professional methods
    • Not suitable for commercial sale

    Basic solvent CBD extraction

Solvent extraction is a rudimentary and risky practice, but it has fans. Essentially, it involves running a liquid solvent through decarboxylated hemp to remove cannabinoids and terpenes. The usual solvents include butane, ethanol, and hexane, so you need to safely evaporate any residual solvent post-extraction to ensure usable CBD extract.

    Pros of solvent extraction

    • Cheap and requires relatively small amounts of equipment
    • Solvent CBD extracts have a respectable degree of purity
    • Easy to scale for commercial production

    Cons of solvent extraction

    • Working with solvents can cause injury if not used correctly, they are highly flammable
    • The oil can remain contaminated with solvent, which is dangerous for the end-user
    • Higher temperatures risk destroying some essential terpenes and other smaller compounds

    Supercritical CO₂ CBD extraction

In this method, CO₂ is manipulated to enter a supercritical state. With characteristics of both a gas and a liquid, it’s pumped through raw plant material under controlled conditions, stripping away essential terpenes and cannabinoids without damaging them.

    Pros of supercritical CO₂ extraction

    • Allows for the extraction of clean and safe concentrates without the use of additional additives or contaminants.
    • Offers highly efficient yields, getting the most out of the hemp plant.
    • CO₂ extraction is sustainable and environmentally friendly

    Cons of supercritical CO₂ extraction

    • Co₂ extraction is an industrial process, making it highly expensive
    • Requires expertise to perform correctly

Which CBD extraction method is the best?

CO₂ extraction has significant advantages over other methods of producing CBD oil. First, you can pump supercritical CO₂ through hemp in such a way that it selectively picks up the cannabinoids and other compounds, leaving everything else behind.

Second, since it uses CO₂, it produces CBD oils free from chemicals and contaminants. And, when the extraction process is over, you can either reuse the CO₂ or release it safely back into the atmosphere. Thanks to this outstanding level of control, supercritical CO₂ has become a leading tool extraction and one that Cibdol uses to create all of its CBD extracts.

Differences Between CBD and CBDa That Make Them Unique

    Posted on December 8th, 2020

Humans have used cannabis for millennia as a food, for its fibers, as well as for its reported medicinal properties. It is only within the past few decades, however, that humanity has really started to understand its chemical makeup. Research from the 1970s revealed the presence of different compounds in the cannabis plant called cannabinoids. About 113 are considered to have effects on the brain and body. Still, there’s limited research into each of the cannabinoids and their specific properties. THC and CBD are perhaps two of the most researched cannabinoids. THC, as you might know, is responsible for the ‘high’ that marijuana causes. CBD, on the other hand, has gained a lot of popularity for its potential health benefits. But what about CBDa, the lesser-known cannabinoid? How is it related to CBD? What are the differences between CBD and CBDa?

    Differences Between CBD and CBDa

First, let’s look at what these two cannabis compounds are. Then we can better explore the differences between CBD and CBDa.

    What is CBDa?

Cannabidiolic acid (CBDa) is a compound that occurs naturally in abundance in growing hemp and cannabis plants. It is the acid form of CBD or the unheated or “raw” form of CBD. When CBDa is heated up, it turns into CBD. CBDa interacts with the body and endocannabinoid system. It may offer health benefits that range from pain relief to mood enhancement.

    What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is also a naturally occurring compound in hemp and cannabis plants. It, however, occurs in very small quantities in living cannabis plants. Instead, CBD comes into existence only once you process and heat the dried plant. CBD is activated when the cannabis plant is exposed to heat in a process known as decarboxylation.

CBD gets a lot of attention for its potential health benefits, but CBDa is probably unknown to a lot of people. If you are like most people, you most likely have questions regarding this compound. CBD and CBDa don’t have intoxicating effects on the brain, which means that they won’t get high the way THC can. While they share some similarities, there are some differences you should know about.

Top 5 Differences Between CBD and CBDa

    Formation

One of the differences between CBD and CBDa is when each compound appears in the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant are not always there simultaneously. Some undergo several processes before they become the final cannabinoids.

Acids are formed first. Cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) comes first and all other cannabinoids stem from it. The CBGA is subsequently converted into other acids. These include Cannabidiolic acid (CBDa), Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCa) and Cannabichromenic acid (CBCa). Enzymes that are unique to every cannabis plant cause the conversions.

That’s where the difference between CBD and CBDa arises. CBDa occurs naturally in the cannabis plant. Enzymes in the plant convert CBGA to CBDa and other acids. On the other hand, CBD does not really appear naturally in the cannabis plant. Instead, it is formed after the CBDa is exposed to heat in a process known as decarboxylation.

Decarboxylation is a chemical process that removes a carboxyl group. It happens once CBDa is heated to a temperature of about 270°F. The process converts the ‘inactive’ CBDa into cannabidiol to produce its benefits. Decarboxylation can also occur if you smoke the cannabis or hemp. Extreme heat from the sun can also cause some decarboxylation in growing plants.

    Consumption Method

CBDa exists in raw cannabis leaves and flowers, which is why juicing raw cannabis is the best consumption method. It can be bitter, which is why it might be necessary to add sugar or a different kind of sweetener.

CBD only occurs after decarboxylation, which means that the cannabis has to be first exposed to heat to access the healing properties of CBD. The most popular ways to consume CBD include vaping and smoking as well as in tinctures, lotions, oils, capsules, and gummies.

    Potential Health Benefits

Both CBD and CBDa are becoming popular because many people want the benefits of cannabis without the “high”. While both have similar potential health benefits, the compounds contained in each aren’t identical in terms of those potential therapeutic effects.

Decarboxylation activates certain properties that are dormant in CBDa, but it also destroys some terpenes. So CBD may offer a wider range of potential health benefits, but it does not offer as many terpene-related benefits.

Studies show that CBD may help improve general well-being and help people dealing with a range of health issues. Many claim it helps with depression, anxiety, epilepsy, stroke, vomiting and nausea, multiple sclerosis, insomnia, and inflammation.

CBDa has yet to receive as much attention from the research community as CBD. Due to this, the true potential of CBDa is still largely unknown at this time. Still, experts have discovered that, with a doctor’s permission, it may be used to improve conditions for people with a number of health conditions. These include seizures, psychotic disorders, inflammation, bacterial infection, arthritis, and pain.

Research shows that using CBD and CBDa together provides the maximum potential health benefits. This is particularly the case if the condition being treated is the result of improper regulation of multiple systems throughout the body. Studies show that CBDa can actually enhance the potency of CBD. This means that users can consume smaller quantities while still experiencing the same level of effectiveness.

However, it is important to never substitute doctor prescribed medications for CBD and CBDa. Always consult with your doctor before you try any new health and wellness product. Be sure to discuss whether any medications you are currently taking are likely to interact with cannabis.

    Availability

Unlike CBD, it is hard to find CBDa products. Due to CBD’s popularity, it is much more prevalent in any cannabis market. Most hemp in the USA is primarily for CBD production. On the other hand, CBDa is rather rare.

The demand is high for both medical cannabis and recreational cannabis in the states where it is legal. Therefore, farmers generally don’t target the CBDa market. Simply put, most farmers don’t bother to grow cannabis for CBDa harvesting.

Raw uncured cannabis that is rich in CBDa can be difficult to find. Even in areas where marijuana is legal, it is sometimes still not possible to find it in local dispensaries. If you do come across raw cannabis flowers or leaves, you can store them in the refrigerator just as you would any other leafy green vegetable.

If you want to enjoy the numerous health benefits of CBDa, you can still find it in raw and full spectrum CBD products. Oils and tinctures containing both CBD and CBDa are becoming increasingly popular. As that popularity grows, you can expect products containing CBDa to become more widespread.

    Working Mechanisms

To wrap up the differences between CBD and CBDa, it is important to look at how both of them work. CBD and CBDa both have a positive impact on the endocannabinoid system. The ECS is responsible for regulating metabolism, cellular communication, immune response, mood, and metabolism.

CBD and CBDa don’t interact with the endocannabinoid system’s main receptors directly. But they can inhibit and activate other receptors to keep the body healthy. When it comes to the working mechanisms, the key differences between CBD and CBDa lie in the specific receptors that they influence:

    – Cannabidiol reacts with serotonin, adenosine, and vanilloid receptors. These reactions mediate inflammation, pain, depression, and anxiety.

    – CBD also inhibits the CPR55 receptor to improve bone density, blood pressure, and cancer-fighting abilities.

    – CBDa, on the other hand, blocks the activities of receptors such as COX-1 and COX-2, which cause inflammation. By doing so, it helps reduce inflammation, seizures, and symptoms of diseases.

Conclusion: Differences Between CBD and CBDa

Now that you know about the differences that exist between CBD and CBDa, you may wonder which one is better. The truth is that both of them provide good potential health benefits, which is why it is useless to choose one over the other. Ideally, you should strive to take them both to enjoy the numerous health benefits they provide in tandem.

Do you want benefits from both CBD and CBDa? Well you can do that by choosing full spectrum CBD products like Tanasi’s. They have ensured that you don’t have to choose between a product containing either CBD or CBDa. Tanasi sells full spectrum hemp oil that contains both CBD and CBDa, along with many other cannabinoids. This means you only need one well-crafted product to achieve the maximum benefits of the hemp plant.

Scientists are still studying the differences between CBD and CBDa. What we know so far is that they provide similar health benefits but are best in tandem.
